Again

My son surprised me
when he seemed surprised himself
when I said
“I’m giving away Dad’s chair.”
His face witnessed to
his inner reaction.
It was unexpected
his desire
to hold on to the recliner.
It’s been four and a half years
and
I thought if one of the kids wanted it
they would have said something by now.
What I recognize
in his question
in his look
in his quiet non-committal statement
is that he misses his dad
and that somehow
his dad is still there
in the soft leather
in the comfort
that the chair offered.
Good thing
the
yard sale
is
a
few
weeks
away.
