Welp. I am no longer a cat lady without any cats. A week and a half ago I caved and said yes to adopting a cat.
The cat belonged to my friend’s mom who passed away a little over a month ago. My friend reached out after his mom took a turn for the worst. Initially, I declined the offer. We were on vacation at the time and the reasons to say no are many. Logically, I don’t need to be responsible for another living thing. Raising three boys alone has already placed me on a path to sainthood. So, my friends took him to their home temporarily while they figured out what to do.
Then two weeks ago, I agreed to cat sit for the weekend. Spoiler alert – this was my downfall. My youngest and I went over to meet him and learn his habits. I could see right away how sweet he was and how much anxiety their dog gave him. Macklin and I fed him and spent time with him over the weekend. At one point, the cat placed his paws in Macklin’s lap, and he just sat there giggling. I asked if liked him and Macklin replied in earnest, “No. I LOVE him.” That is the exact moment I was a goner.
So, I let my friends know we were ready to take in the cat and he was delivered a few days later. The older two boys tried to be indifferent to his arrival. However, they are failing miserably.
The boys are working together to take turns on who gets to feed him next. They aren’t fighting over litterbox cleaning, but they are dutifully taking turns. Each kid is begging for snuggles and head scratches.
All of it makes me wonder why I didn’t get a cat sooner. I certainly contemplated it many times over. We even went to the pet store a few times and snuggled kittens. The logical part of my brain always held me back. I’m not sure I ever would have caved without a cat basically showing up on my doorstep.
Sometimes, logic isn’t the best answer. Sometimes, we need to go ahead and adopt that furball. I also find myself chuckling because Tony hated cats. This adoption never would have happened if he was here. But we wouldn’t have needed it as much with him here either.
Therefore, I introduce to you our newest family member, Travis. As life-long Chiefs fans, he may or may not be named after my favorite Tight End, Travis Kelce. I’ll let you decide.
