Tuesday, June 30th, would’ve been the 66th birthday of my late sister, Manette. Each year, I recount the story of how my horse-loving sister magically acquired a lovely, but feisty, Arabian Quarter Horse mix in 1973 when my family spent 9 months living in Boulder, Colorado. My essay, The Year of the Dream Horse, a story about their charming relationship, appeared in a horse-rescue anthology published by the Revell-Baker Publishing Group. As an adult, she became a NYC-based award-winning documentary maker and producer in the health field.

I’ve especially miss her now, and so many other family members, in the wake of the recent passing of 32 year-old entertainer and musician, Oliver Tree. Although there maybe some adults who have not known of him, kids loved him and he had a massive global following. On Monday, June 29th, he would’ve turned 33. The overwhelming amount of online tributes is a testament to his unique legacy.
Oliver is related to me. He is the son of my cousin Christine and her husband Jesse, of Santa Cruz, the only brother of Jessup and mourned by many close family members and friends. My late father’s brother, Dan (RIP), was Christine’s father. My late mother was her Godmother. Our families spent a lot of time together growing up with visits in New York, New Jersey and later California. With four kids in each family very similar in age, I have so many special youthful memories of our times spent together.

Oliver Tree (his real name) was a true original and creative force who inspired so many to live life their best lives in the moment. I knew this before his passing, but in his death, I’ve learned so much more about his short amazing life. He packed so much life in every moment he had here on earth. That has inspired me, personally and professionally.
I truly feel for his family and those of the other young men who perished in the horrific helicopter crash as they set off from Rio de Janeiro as part of a one-of-a-kind worldwide tour that was to end in October. They have all lost a beloved family member and friend.
Shortly before I learned of Oliver’s passing, I’d planted my first Moringa Tree seedling in the ground. I’ve mentioned in earlier posts how I’ve become fascinated with the Moringa. Also known as The Tree of Life. Look them up, you will be impressed.

According to the Good Housekeeping Site, Moringas are one of the most nutrient-dense plants in the world. ‘Packed with essential amino acids, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, it’s a plant that offers both nutrition and versatility.’
I wasn’t aware that the Moringa has 13 species, but only a few have been studied in modern research. Why not? I’m always intriqued with nature-based supplements, but I always advise people to do their own research and consult with physicians before adding.
I think Oliver Tree would appreciate the fact that I’ve named my first planted Tree of Life Oliver in his honor. He might be amused to know that our big dog Jackson has christened that small, but thriving seedling, in the way a dog will do when faced with a new tree! My second planting fell victim to a lawn mower, but my seeds are sprouting and we have back up. I will continue to plant my seedlings in the memory of loved ones as I hope for better days for all.
Happy Heavenly Birthday to my sister and first cousin once removed, Oliver. They both truly cared about the lives of others. They were here for only a short while, but the quality of their days, humble and genuine natures, and inspriring work continues to impact others in so many ways.
Wishing all a safe holiday week ahead for both pets and peeps during this special 250th Celebration of the USA.
