Tag, You’re It

I’ve been navigating orthodontic issues with my oldest son. We tried a non-invasive solution for almost a year before they decided we should consult an oral surgeon. Consulted for braces (again) and surgery, then mid-stream a second opinion put us on a surgery only plan. Based on the information we have, I believe we have made the right decision.

But this was a big decision and there is no going back. Once teeth are removed, they gone gone. I really wished I could have mulled the decision over with Tony. But I put on my big girl pants and moved forward with what I hope was the right call.

Last Friday, our son had his oral surgery. They removed his wisdom teeth and additional molars due to spatial issues. I was really hoping for silliness as he woke up from anesthesia but unfortunately, he woke up already in pain.

I had cleared our weekend, so I could take care of him. My cup overflowed with patience all weekend. For 3 straight days, I got him whatever he needed. We watched a few movies together. He had a pretty good attitude about the whole situation even though he was uncomfortable.

Then today hit. He is trying to stop taking as many pain meds. I was working from home. He is getting stir crazy sitting on the couch and feeling like crud. I lost all my bedside manor while he grumbled about.

Today, we both needed Tony. I needed Tony so I could tag out and he could take over for a while. My son needed his dad so he could have a refreshed parent helping him through the day.

These are the glaring moments where I feel his absence. I miss having a partner to make decisions and find reprieve with. We powered through like we always do, but Tony was missed today.

About Emily Vielhauer

My name is Emily Vielhauer, I am 45 years old and have 3 knuckleheaded sons who are between the ages of 11 and 15. My husband, Tony, and I were married for 14 years and despite how things ended we built something great together.

April 19th, 2021 was the last day of my ‘before’ story. The day before I became a widow, before I was a solo parent to 3 boys, before I knew my love was suffering in silence, before suicide rocked my world, before I had to break the hearts of my children and all our friends and family, before I planned a funeral and delivered a eulogy, before I knew the true depths of my love for Tony and the way that love would be expressed through grief, so many befores.

My hope for this blog is to take you along with me as I navigate my life in the ‘after’ and that my words help someone else out there, whether they empower you or just let you know that you’re not alone out there.
