I’m drafting this post as I watch the UCONN-Villanova Big East Tournament game.March Madness has begun. If you are into basketball, you understand the amazing legacy of both the UCONN men’s and women’s teams. March Madness used to drive Rich crazy. He wasn’t a big sports fan and with UCONN typically playing to the bitter end he had to put up with my intense obsession during this time of year as I cheered on my alma mater. Back in the late 70s I actually worked at the UCONN games in Storrs, games when they played in the old Field House and Gampel Pavilion was not even in the planning stages.
I’m writing to distract myself because so far Huskies are trailing. But wait!
At the moment, they are tied with Villanova.
Karaban has just put UCONN in the lead with a 3-pointer!
My dog Jackson seems to know this is a special night. He has come out of his crate and has his head on my lap. As I type he snores.
Score 58-54 – UCONN.
Jackson had a big week. Our neighbors had a visitor with an RV and a young black German shepherd dog that bonded with Jackie. They rough played for hours each day and called for each other every chance they got. Yesterday we came home to find that Cash and his human had left to return home to Pennsylvania. Jackson kept sniffing the area where they’d been staying trying to figure out why and how his new best friend had disappeared. He whined for a bit, before realizing he’d been neglecting his own pack and turned back his attention to tormenting them per usual.
Current Score: 60-54 – UCONN
This made me realize that Jackson, a large and strong young dog is in need of a non-aggressive yet assertive playmate. I filled out an application to foster dogs from the K-9 For Warriors program that work with rescue dogs in training to be companions for veterans. I thought that Jackson would make a great Foster Ambassador by helping a foster dog to have a happy and safe home while Jackson got to make new friends. Unfortunately, my homes are just outside the area of eligibility by about 30 miles. I’m sure there are more local programs that I might approach, but this would’ve been so meaningful.
Current 65-54 – UCONN!
The Boat House has become a great distraction for me in what has been a turbulent time (I will write more on that soon) as well for the dogs who think of it as the “Other House”. With a big weather warm up in place, it’s great to have instant water access and a boat to enjoy boating season. This place is being transformed into a terrific property and I look forward to a fun summer spending time there.
Final Score! 73-56!!
See – my distraction paid off. I wrote a blog post while UCONN fought back and won big! I love when things like that happen.
Tomorrow UCONN will face Creighton!
To. Be. Continued…
Update: Friday, midnight.
Well, so much for a big win. Creighton took that honor complete with some high drama at the end when a fight just about broke out between two players, a rare scene, indeed. We’ll blame it on the influences of a Full Moon.
But, the Huskies aren’t down and out with the No. 2 seeded Women’s team up next. Bring it, Ladies!
To. Be. Continued.
Have a great week and Happy St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations to all. Sending love above to that handsome Irishman I love and miss every day and my mom, a descendant of Aggie Wehlan from County Cork.
