Unfinished Business

Posted on: November 13, 2025 | Posted by: Gary Ravitz

I awoke from a dream about an old friend, whom I’ve neither seen nor spoken to for many years. I still harbor fond feelings for her, despite the long passage of time.

In my dream, I had made up my mind to reach out to her, only to learn (somehow) that she had died.  In my dream, this news saddened me greatly, and I told someone that I had had unfinished business with her.

In real life, however, I do not.  And thankfully, it appears she is alive and well.

Even so, I was vexed. Was my friend merely a dream stand-in for someone or something else?  If so, then whom or what?  And what was the nature of my unfinished business?

Of course, there can be myriad explanations for unfinished business we encounter in our dreams. If it is impossible to precisely identify the dream “business” with any degree of certainty, then you well may ask why even bother?  It’s a fair question.

Nonetheless, being human, I was required to ponder its meaning.  So, over coffee, I spent the next morning cataloging my past transgressions, my personal and professional failings, my unfulfilled ambitions, and the reality that I don’t have sufficient time left to make full amends, even if I dedicated myself to trying.  Instead, I resolved to continue trying to be my best self from day to day. With any luck, this effort will be sufficient to give my life meaning.

About Gary Ravitz

In relevant part, my musings are for me. It’s one of the ways in which I process losing my sweetest. Of course, Lee didn’t want to die. She had fought like hell, but the relentless cancers kept coming: Skin cancers; breast cancer; head and neck cancer; colon cancer; and finally, the deadly pancreatic cancer. In June 2020, and only after being pressed hard by Lee, her oncologist opined that my wife had from two weeks to two months left to live, turned on her heels and nearly sprinted from the hospital room, never again to be seen or heard from by us. I promptly removed Lee from the hospital and brought her home. It was the right thing to do and I only wish I had acted sooner over “the best” medical advice to the contrary. In fact, my sweet wife only had nine days left to live. At the final, she embraced her own death with great courage and unfailing kindness. It was a truly remarkable display of grace and wondrous to behold. It was my great privilege and honor to be with her every step of the way. And now, it’s my privilege to be able to write a few words to you each week. In a nutshell, I believe every journey is unique, but, hopefully, to know that you do not have to walk it alone can also be reassuring. And, along the way, you might hear a bit more information about me.
