The Point of the Mountain

Posted on: August 16, 2026 | Posted by: Grace Villafuerte

“One day, the mountain that is in front of you will be so far behind you, it will barely be visible in the distance. But the person you become in learning to get over it? That will stay with you forever. And that is the point of the mountain.”
― Brianna Wiest, The Mountain is You
I have been thinking about this quote ever since I read it a little while ago. I feel this deeply in sooo many ways. The immediate and most obvious way I relate to this quote is, losing your partner is one of the top life-changing experiences – NOT just that you become a widow, but the grief journey and allll the million nuances that come with it is life changing. It changes how you relate to yourself and the world, your relationships, your understanding of purpose in life, etc. AND, now that my point of view has shifted, it forever changes how I interact in the world and all the small and large decisions I make. And to be honest, losing the second main person supervising me (my Mom) really changed how I make decisions now!

In the last few days, I have been thinking that the way I have changed, and how I choose to intentionally move forward as a changed person is part of Lynn’s legacy… and I feel it’s also my Mom’s legacy. Their life, and getting to be part of their life and them being part of my life, greatly influenced my life, in a positive way. And now, their death also influences my life – in painful ways, BUT also in positive ways, through the lessons I’ve learned, how the grief sometimes made me fearless, how I have a heightened understanding of limited time, etc. And bitter sweetly, I better understand my relationships with Lynn and my Mom, and I wish that I could share these understandings, and move forward and evolve our relationships in the physical form. I feel if I don’t acknowledge and have gratitude for these changes, I don’t honor the life and all the death of Lynn and my Mom. I get a feeling like it minimizes or disrespects their death, and ultimately their life. It’s a beautiful thing, I think, to move forward in life, having been impacted so deeply. I feel like I have a bad ass tool belt to move thru life! And the tools have been handed down from my favorite people.

The mountain is / was their deaths, and while I am relieved (!) that the sight of the mountain has become relatively smaller over time, I never ever want to lose complete sight of it. It is part of my past, present, and future, as well as my loved ones life.
