The Depths

Posted on: August 15, 2025 | Posted by: Sherry Holub

I read a fair amount of material on the supernatural, the paranormal, the occult, things lumped into the realm of “spiritual” as well as cultural interpretations on death and what might come after. This isn’t something that just started after I lost my person, this was something that started with my dad introducing me to shows like “In Search Of…”, my uncle (dad’s bro) working at a fairly well-known occult shop in Los Angeles, and stumbling on FATE Magazine and oddball books when I was much younger. So you could say, I’ve had an interest in “the unknown” for most of my life. There are many fascinating topics to cover and whether you fully believe in certain things is up to personal interpretation.

On the one hand, none of us truly know what happens, on a conscious level, when our hearts perform their last beats and the body ceases to function. Sure, medicine and science know all about what leads to death, what happens during the dying process and what happens in the body and even the brain at the time of death and the minutes after. But after that? Nada. All we have is stories and personal interpretations (people with NDEs or Near Death Experiences), both of which can be very much manipulated by our living, conscious thoughts and emotions. Sounds like a skeptical statement, right?

My personal viewpoint is that yes, I do believe SOMETHING happens to our consciousness after death. I side with the folks who theorize that “energy” can not be “killed” like the physical body can. Perhaps our consciousness is part of that energy? Perhaps we do have a soul or spirit that resides within our energy and can come and go from the physical body?

I know some folks who theorize that things like spirits or paranormal activity can, at times, be projects from our own consciousness. If our human brains are capable of such things, then I theorize that there is probably untapped and unknown potential there, right in our own skulls, let alone in the greater universe of all things.

But isn’t it fascinating how so many of us have received “messages” from beyond? Or seen, felt or heard things? These are not ALL coming from our own minds. There is “phenomena” (to use a catch all term) happening and it’s not something new. Since recorded history, there have been tales of contact from human, animal and other spirits.

Mario and I used to have long discussions about what may exist out in the universe and what phenomena might be out there. Mario certainly had abilities to tap into whatever it is and receive information. He never called himself a “psychic” though (nor do I for that matter). He used to say he was “picking up the cosmic radio”. We all have intuition or “gut feelings”, but I do believe that some of us are more finely tuned. You can probably think of at least once instance in your own life where you felt something was not right and later found out that was an accurate feeling.

For me, I think there were a lot of the people who were a little more “tuned in” throughout both sides of the family after hearing a number of stories. I tend to believe that sort of thing can be ancestral. Even still, I think there is untapped resources in the human brain and many people may be able to access those.

There are many times in my life now where I either call on Mario or my dad to help me through something. It’s often some mundane thing like repairing something. For those sorts of situations, it’s usually my dad who I enlist the help of because he was that guy that could fix anything. Mario, not so much, although he was helpful for other tasks. While I haven’t gotten any random “signs” from my dad, I feel he’s definitely helped when I’ve asked for it. Mario seemed to send a bunch of signs within the first year of his passing–almost as if to say, “I’m here and you got this”. I think my dad already knew I got this. He was someone else I’d have deep discussions with about all of these topics.

For me, it’s fun to explore the depths of deep topics like this, even thought it might bring up difficult memories and remind me that my person has gone wherever it is we go, if in fact we do go somewhere. Tomorrow the sun will still rise in the sky and I am here to live another day.

I’ll leave you with a quote from one of my favorite music artists:

Every time you feel the wind blow
And a glow within you dies
When tomorrow comes, you will know
That the morning thaws the ice

Last night after writing this post, I went downstairs and to relax a bit turned on YouTube on the TV. The first thing showing was the video below. Very interesting podcast with a neuroscientist talking about receiving signs for her husband who passed away.

About Sherry Holub

I met my spouse, Mario, at UCLA School of Art in 1993. After graduating in 1995, I founded a small agency specializing in web and graphic design. Mario became my partner in the company in 1999. In 2002, we were married at the Costa Mesa, CA court house because neither of us wanted a big wedding ceremony (after already being together since 1995).

Mario was a highly talented artist, musician, illustrator and 3D Designer, but a tortured one. He was one of those gentle, creative souls who ended up burning twice as bright for half as long. Mario lost the battle with liver disease induced by alcoholism (almost exactly 6 months after he became sober) on 2/10/21.

I’m a long-time artist and writer with a background in photography who enjoys cooking, getting outdoors, staying young at heart, and sharing experiences to potentially help others. When it comes to writing, I’ve written both for fun and professionally over the years. Writing is also sometimes therapy for me and I don’t mind sharing my personal experiences with a wider audience.
