Indian Summer

Posted on: October 22, 2026 | Posted by: Gary Ravitz

In this part of the country, people call the dry conditions and above-normal temperatures we’ve enjoyed late into October Indian Summer. Only sticklers and killjoys would quibble that it’s not truly Indian Summer until we experience the first killing frost, which we have not.

Regardless, I’ve taken advantage of this fine weather to finish many, though not all, outdoor chores, which I’ve let languish in past years right up to the first early taste of snow.

For once, I’m feeling more like the industrious ant than the frivolous grasshopper, fiddling away his time. So, if you can’t tell, I’m feeling pretty pleased with myself right now, so much so that I’m inspired to do some early raking before we leave tomorrow.

While it almost feels like a reward for my hard efforts, mere coincidence has it that tomorrow, Robyn, Lola the pup, and I are taking a weekend jaunt to the country. The timing is right since we are quickly approaching peak fall color.  And from past trips, I know the digs will be comfortable. Robyn hasn’t been this way before (nor has Lola).  Truth is, it’s been many years for me, too.  So long as our good weather holds, what’s better than spending a fun, relaxing weekend with my best girl and best pup?

Speaking of coincidences, while we’re away, Craig and Donna’s oldest child, Jennifer, will be here with her husband Greg for a “parents’ weekend” at their younger son’s university. They also stayed with me last year.  I put them up in my basement, where they enjoyed a Queen sleeper sofa, a working bathroom, and kitchen facilities. It would be generous to describe their accommodations as spartan.

Fortunately, in my absence this year, they will have full run of the place.  And, since I am rather fond of my home, I say without reservation that this constitutes a major upgrade.  Lucky them!

About Gary Ravitz

In relevant part, my musings are for me. It’s one of the ways in which I process losing my sweetest. Of course, Lee didn’t want to die. She had fought like hell, but the relentless cancers kept coming: Skin cancers; breast cancer; head and neck cancer; colon cancer; and finally, the deadly pancreatic cancer. In June 2020, and only after being pressed hard by Lee, her oncologist opined that my wife had from two weeks to two months left to live, turned on her heels and nearly sprinted from the hospital room, never again to be seen or heard from by us. I promptly removed Lee from the hospital and brought her home. It was the right thing to do and I only wish I had acted sooner over “the best” medical advice to the contrary. In fact, my sweet wife only had nine days left to live. At the final, she embraced her own death with great courage and unfailing kindness. It was a truly remarkable display of grace and wondrous to behold. It was my great privilege and honor to be with her every step of the way. And now, it’s my privilege to be able to write a few words to you each week. In a nutshell, I believe every journey is unique, but, hopefully, to know that you do not have to walk it alone can also be reassuring. And, along the way, you might hear a bit more information about me.
