Haunted Houses

Posted on: September 19, 2025 | Posted by: Sherry Holub

Last Friday, a friend and I went down to a local restaurant that’s located inside a historic Victorian house originally built in 1891. It also happens to be 2 doors down from the 1895 Queen Anne style cottage Mario and I purchased and renovated (and that my friend still rents from me).

We’d been there before, but earlier in the year, a new owner took over and we hadn’t been there since. When I saw that Thursday – Saturday if you come for a meal or drinks, you can get a free spooky tour of the place, I’d suggested we check it out.

It was honestly the best Friday I’d had in a long time.

We ended up ordering pizzas (they have a wood fired oven) that were very tasty. After eating, we hooked up with the tour guide who happened to also be a medium. We hit it off and even ended up telling her about plenty of haunted experiences we’ve had. In one room, I had mentioned that my husband, who was no longer with us, used to get really “bad vibes” off certain areas of the house and also talked about seeing a “sparkly” thing that roamed down the alley way.

(the photo is from before it became a restaurant as part of the restaurant is an addition at the back side of the house.)

The house has a round room at the very top. This was by far the weirdest space as far as “vibes” go. Somehow, the floor was vibrating – yet no other area in the house was. For me, who’s quite sensitive to spaces, it was definitely an uneasy feeling being up there.

The medium was a great tour guide with a lot of energy and we ended up exchanging information at the end as we gave her an invite to come over to my 1895 and check it out sometime soon. We chatted a bit more and before leaving she mentioned, “oh he’s still around” in reference to Mario. I said, “I know”.

Most people have heard the term clairvoyance, but there are actually different types based on abilities. Clairvoyance is usually when people can “see” things in some way. I suspect Mario fell into that group. For me, it’s more like clairsentience, which is experiencing feelings, emotions and intuitive insights. There has been the rare occasion where I’ve seen something I can’t explain, but it is very rare. Anyway, even though I believe in plenty of weird stuff, I still have a healthy amount of skepticism, but I have a feeling that the medium we met does in fact have abilities.

It will be very interesting to see what she says about my rental. My friend and I know the history of the place pretty well, but that whole surrounding area just seems to be a “hot spot” of paranormal activity too. Honestly, the whole downtown area is. There are apparently tunnels running all through downtown but most have had concrete or other barricades put into the entrances in the basement of buildings. I have seen photos of those, so I know they exist, but apparently there was a tunnel going from the Victorian house into town. If that is true, it’s got to be a really long tunnel. We often thought there was something really weird about the backyard at the rental, so who knows. Maybe there is a tunnel under there somewhere?

At the rental, it’s not unusual to hear odd noises now and then. One time my friend caught sight of something that he said, “looked like Cousin It” on the porch. And then of course there’s the sparkly thing Mario used to see.

Anyway, after meeting the medium, I started following her on Facebook and found out she’s also going to be guiding a tour of the downtown area in October, so I’m definitely getting tickets to that. I’ve heard so many stories about so many buildings down there. Paranormal meets history is right up my alley. I have a feeling Mario would want to join me on that tour too.

About Sherry Holub

I met my spouse, Mario, at UCLA School of Art in 1993. After graduating in 1995, I founded a small agency specializing in web and graphic design. Mario became my partner in the company in 1999. In 2002, we were married at the Costa Mesa, CA court house because neither of us wanted a big wedding ceremony (after already being together since 1995).

Mario was a highly talented artist, musician, illustrator and 3D Designer, but a tortured one. He was one of those gentle, creative souls who ended up burning twice as bright for half as long. Mario lost the battle with liver disease induced by alcoholism (almost exactly 6 months after he became sober) on 2/10/21.

I’m a long-time artist and writer with a background in photography who enjoys cooking, getting outdoors, staying young at heart, and sharing experiences to potentially help others. When it comes to writing, I’ve written both for fun and professionally over the years. Writing is also sometimes therapy for me and I don’t mind sharing my personal experiences with a wider audience.
