249 Weeks

Posted on: November 21, 2025 | Posted by: Sherry Holub

I’m still processing the grief of losing my cat and I’ve just been uninspired to write this week, so it’s going to be one those freeform type of posts that jump from topic to topic.

First, I find myself saying, “I can’t believe how fast this …. week, month, year….” Has gone by way too often now. Next week will be Thanksgiving already. I’m doing “Friendsgiving” this year as my mom opted out of wanting to do Thanksgiving last month and Mario’s dad accepted an invite somewhere else. I’ll still be cooking, but it will just be me and 3 friends enjoying the meal. I’m fine with that and I enjoy cooking and it should be a fun night with interesting conversation.

As I think about how weeks seem to fly by, I got curious and looked up just how many weeks it’s been since I became a member of Club Widow. 249. Stated like that it seems nuts that many weeks have passed by. Then I think about what a journey it’s been so far and how far I’ve come in all those weeks. I can’t help but think about Mario’s journey too. If you’re like me and believe that we all have souls that transcend the death of the physical body, I think it’s natural to wonder what your loved ones who have passed on are up to as well.

Speaking of passed loved ones, I received a sign, but it might not have been from Mario. Wednesday morning I woke up and after taking off my sleep eye mask my first thought was, what is that odd light. I looked towards the window and I see that the moon light that’s on a small stand next to my night stand is on. I’m getting more used to strange and unusual things happening but it still surprised me. I hadn’t actually turned on that light in months. I was kind of surprised the battery still worked. But here’s the thing… there’s only one way to turn that light on. At the bottom, there a touch sensitive area. You have to touch that area with your hand in order to do it. So there it was, shining brightly, with nothing moved or out of place and I did not turn it on and I am the only human in the house. So I got up out of bed, said “thanks for turning my moon light on” to no one in particular and went about my day.

Moon light

It was only that evening that it dawned on me… my dad was the one who bought me that moon light as a gift one year. Shortly after having that thought, I went downstairs, walked past the bedroom, and there was that moon light shining brightly again. So perhaps it is my dad, finally figuring out a way to send me a sign? It makes more logical sense than the thing turning itself on by other means because there is no way for it to simply turn itself on. It will be interesting to see if it happens again.

So week 249 “A.M.” (After Mario) is quickly coming to an end. Unlike some weeks along the way, I do have a positive outlook for the future. I feel a shift…a change happening.

About Sherry Holub

I met my spouse, Mario, at UCLA School of Art in 1993. After graduating in 1995, I founded a small agency specializing in web and graphic design. Mario became my partner in the company in 1999. In 2002, we were married at the Costa Mesa, CA court house because neither of us wanted a big wedding ceremony (after already being together since 1995).

Mario was a highly talented artist, musician, illustrator and 3D Designer, but a tortured one. He was one of those gentle, creative souls who ended up burning twice as bright for half as long. Mario lost the battle with liver disease induced by alcoholism (almost exactly 6 months after he became sober) on 2/10/21.

I’m a long-time artist and writer with a background in photography who enjoys cooking, getting outdoors, staying young at heart, and sharing experiences to potentially help others. When it comes to writing, I’ve written both for fun and professionally over the years. Writing is also sometimes therapy for me and I don’t mind sharing my personal experiences with a wider audience.
