Sammy is Gone

Posted on: May 8, 2022 | Posted by: Kelley Lynn

This is pretty much what I wrote on Facebook this morning, with a few added thoughts. I just do not have the energy to put thoughts to words right now. My Sammy is gone on this Mothers Day.

Woke up super early this morning with “that feeling” that I needed to go and check on my Sammy-Sam. Walked downstairs and saw Autumn, sort of wandering around in a daze. Looked for Sammy on his favorite chair, but he wasnt there. Walked a bit further and thats when I noticed him lying on the cement floor. He is gone.

Looks like it happened overnight at some point. He was so weak and fragile and HOURS AGO late last night, me and Nick and my parents, who are staying with us over Mothers Day weekend, were having a talk about “when the time comes”, how to best say goodbye to Sammy in the most peaceful and loving way possible. We spoke of giving him one last delicious supper, holding him all day long, petting him, and loving him into that final moment. We were looking into options for end of life, because he was not well and he was getting worse just in the last few days really. Don’s death was SO shocking and sudden, and I had NO control over any part of it. With Sammy, I was hoping to give him that beautiful last day with us, and spend it loving him into the next whatever. But death is a funny thing, and it makes all the calls.
I went upstairs and gently woke up Nick, and told him. He came downstairs and lovingly moved Sammy from the floor to his favorite chair, on the Don blanket he loves, then we wrapped him in a towel so that he’s not just lying there exposed. Then we sat with Autumn in the other room, just petting her and comforting her.
Today, we will bury Sammy in our yard in a special place, and hold a ceremony for him, and we will give him that beautiful send-off that he so deserves. I hope beyond hope that where he is going, he will somehow be wrapped around Don Shepherd’s head like a wreath, sleeping and smiling. That is where he has always belonged.
Im beyond devastated, and a bit in shock right now. I will say more words later on, because there is so much more to be said for this incredible cat. Right now though, I just feel lost.
My sweet, 22 year old Sammy. The best, most loving kitty on earth.
Mama loves you, sweet boy. RIP, sleeping on Papa’s head.
